2013 Completed Boots on the Ground Projects

  • New Jersey Pheasant Transport Box Build
    Union members in New Jersey constructed and painted pheasant transport boxes for the New Jersey Fish and Game Department pheasant program, which raises and releases 50,000 pheasants annually.
  • Texas Adopt-A-Park Bridge Repair
    Using $3,000 raised at the USA’s Dallas Area Conservation Dinner, union and contractor volunteers in the Dallas area repaired three dilapidated bridges at Cedar Hills State Park, making them safe for hikers and other park visitors as part of the USA’s first Adopt-A-Park project.
  • Tennessee Adopt-A-Park Bridget Rebuild
    Volunteers from the Nashville Building Trades rebuilt a bridge at Tennessee’s Montgomery Bell State Park that had been washed away in the 2010 floods and that leads to some of the most popular areas of the park as part of USA’s Adopt-A-Park branch of Boots on the Ground.
  • Wisconsin Take Kids Fishing Day
    The Western Wisconsin AFL-CIO and Western Wisconsin Building Trades Locals hosted youth and their parents or guardians for a day of free, instructional fishing at Pettibone Beach Lagoon in LaCrosse, WI and Braun’s Bay Carson Park in Eau Claire, WI.
  • Illinois Torstenson Conservation Center Limb Removal
    Volunteers from IBEW Local 196 removed dead limbs from trees above a camping area at Illinois’ Torstenson Conservation Center to make it safe for boyscouts and other youth groups that utilize the area.

2012 Completed Boots on the Ground Projects

  • Illinois Wild Hog Trap Build
    USA members in IL assisted the Illinois DNR in building corral hog traps to help control the spread of invasive hogs and prevent the damage they cause to native species.
  • Illinois Take Kids Fishing Day
    USA members and staff hosted a youth fishing day for 37 autistic, special needs, and normally developing children from the Laborers’ Therapy Center in Southern Illinois.
  • Wisconsin Take Kids Fishing Day
    USA members and staff hosted a youth fishing day for nearly 100 youth in Western Wisconsin.
  • Ohio Take Kids Fishing Day
    USA members and staff hosted a youth fishing derby for special needs youth in Southern Ohio.
  • Tennessee Scholastic Shooting Complex Construction
    USA members and staff assisted with the building, installation and painting of an entrance gate, secured electrical supplies and volunteered their services for future projects in the construction of a scholastic youth shooting complex.
  • Illinois Youth Conservation Education Center Painting
    USA members teamed up with the IL Conservation Foundation to paint the new Torstenson Youth Conservation Education Center in Pecatonica, Illinois.
  • Minnesota Get Youth Outdoors Day
    USA members and staff hosted a “Get Youth Outdoors Day” where 22 local youth were treated to lessons on ATV safety, bird flushing, rifle shooting and shotgun shooting.
  • Ohio 2nd Annual Special Needs Youth Hunt
    USA members fundraised for and hosted a whitetail hunt in Ohio for more than 30 special needs youth in the community.
  • California Bolsa Chica Wetlands Trail Maintenance
    USA members and staff volunteered at the Bolsa Chica Wetlands to plant native grasses and vegetation, clear brush and invasive weeds and complete general trail maintenance.
