This week on Brotherhood Outdoors, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) member Jared Crast embarks on his all-time North American dream hunt. Crast is joined by his brother on the three-day do-it-yourself (DIY) Sitka blacktail deer hunt on Kodiak Island. In typical DIY fashion, the hunting duo encounters unexpected and dangerous challenges.
An avid hunter, Crast has been adventuring in the outdoors since before he could walk. “My father would put me in a wicker pack and track whitetail on state land and some private pieces, as a way to babysit me,” said Crast. After going to college for Environmental Engineering, Crast wanted a more hands-on career, so he applied to the electrical union. Crast is now in the fourth year of his apprenticeship with IBEW Local 43 in New York. For Crast, brotherhood and hunting go hand-in-hand, and he is adamant about preserving and passing on the team aspect that is also important within the hunting community.
A DIY hunt presents its own obstacles, but Kodiak Island adds another layer of suspense when the brothers are met by a massive brown bear. They first saw the bear while spotting and stalking a trophy buck, but the bear gets a little too close for comfort. The expedition quickly shifts from focusing on a buck to making sure the hunter doesn’t become the hunted.
