August 23rd was a lucky day for SMWIA Local 9 Business Manager and long-time angler Dwayne Stephens who won a $600 fishing package at a Business Agents conference in Toronto, compliments of the Union Sportsmen’s Alliance (USA).
“I don’t normally win stuff, so I was pretty surprised,” said Stephens who took home an Extreme XPS Travel Spinning rod, an Extreme XPS Travel Trigger rod, Extreme baitcast and spinning reels, an XPS 360 soft side tackle box, an XPS Platinum Series flotation vest and XPS Caicos Fisherman sunglasses. “The reels are very nice…the poles are great too. I already had them out in the backyard to practice casting a bit.”
One of the many benefits of joining the USA is the chance to win thousands of dollars worth of hunting and fishing gear, gift certificates and trips, which will be promoted on the USA website throughout the year.
According to Stephens, the USA is a great idea since so many union members and retirees hunt and fish. “It gives union members the chance to join a club that aligns with their ideals.”
The first place Stephens hopes to use his new gear is Grand Lake, one of the headwaters of the Colorado River. “Winning this package made me realize that I need to make more time to get out and enjoy these activities,” said Stephens, who has been fishing for bass and trout and hunting for elk and deer since his youth.
