Nashville, TN—Nearly 200 shooters attended the Union Sportsmen’s Alliance’s (USA) 4th annual AFL-CIO Capital Area Sporting Clays Shoot— the largest grossing event in the history of the USA’s shooting program—on Friday, June 1 at Pintail Point in Queenstown, MD.
Drawing nearly 40 teams from across the east coast and shooters of all skill level, the event raised $130,000 to help support the USA’s conservation efforts to protect hunting and fishing access, preserve wildlife habitat and mentor a future generation of sportsmen and women.
Bringing together union members, shooting enthusiasts and special guests during National Great Outdoors Month, the event was hosted locally by the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO).
The shoot also garnered support from corporate sponsors like Bank of Labor, Beretta USA and Union Insurance Group as well as more than 40 additional sponsors including the Boilermakers, Plumbers and Pipefitters, Postal Workers, Sheet Metal Workers and Electrical Workers Local 26.
“We couldn’t be more pleased about how the 4th Annual AFL-CIO Capital Area Sporting Clays Shoot turned out,” said USA Board Chairman and AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka. “Not only did the event raise a record amount of money to support the USA’s conservation mission, but it allowed us to engage with new and veteran shooters, build camaraderie among various trades and honor the military veterans who have sacrificed so much.”
Thanks to Ironworkers Local 5, BNY Mellon and WellDyne RX, the USA was able to extend complimentary shooting access to more than a dozen of America’s heroes from the Wounded Warriors program.
“The booming applause at the start and finish of the event for our troops was inspiring,” said Pepper Ailor, Director of Programs for Freedom Alliance. “They enjoyed activities like this before they were injured, and this is a reminder to them that life is not over—they can still enjoy the things they love.”
Each year the USA’s nationwide shooting tour brings the union community together at more than 25 sporting clays and trap shoots in 17 states—including Alaska, California, Nevada, Missouri, Minnesota, Kansas, Indiana and more.
