Meet New USA Conservation Coordinator Maggie Sager
The Union Sportsmen’s Alliance is excited to welcome new Conservation Coordinator, Maggie Sager. Get to know Maggie as she explains growing up in Austin, Texas, her passion for the environment, and more.
Q: Tell us about your background and how it led you to this role?
A: I have a degree in Environmental Science from the University of Tampa. Since I graduated, I have worked in environmental and ocean conservation nonprofits, gaining experience in running youth events and environmental camps, large-scale habitat restoration and cleanup events, and recruiting and managing volunteers.
Q: Where are you from? What does your family look like?
A: I am from Austin, Texas, where I grew up always spending time outdoors with my family. My parents are still in the Austin area and my sister & her family live in Thailand doing missions work. I’m currently living around the Houston, Texas area but am moving to the Spring Hill, Tennessee area soon!
Q: How did you get interested in the outdoors?
A: My family has always been the outdoorsy type. I started learning how to swim before I could walk and we spent all our weekends and summers at the lake swimming and kayaking or exploring new hiking trails and state parks. My sister & I spent all our afternoons at the park with friends or out riding our bikes, any free time we had was spent outside year-round.
Q: When did you realize you wanted to work in conservation?
A: I have known I wanted to work in conservation since a very young age. All throughout school I took every science/environmental class I could, and there wasn’t a doubt in my mind when I chose to study conservation in college. It has been the only career path that has ever made sense for me & I have been very fortunate to be able to line my career up with my passions.
Q: What areas of conservation/wildlife/outdoors are you most passionate about?
A: I care deeply about equitable outdoor access and environmental preservation for all people and animals to have a healthy place to live and spend time in for generations to come. I also love sharing my passion and knowledge about the outdoors with others through education and outreach.
Q: How does the USA’s mission statement resonate with you?
A: My passions and values align well with the USA’s vision and mission, being passionate about the outdoors and caring about connecting with communities through recreation and preservation. I also think it is important to get youth into the outdoors to see the same passion and preservation continue into the next generation.
Q: What are you looking forward to most in your new role?
A: I am looking forward to getting to connect with new communities all over the country, work with youth and USA’s wonderful volunteers, and contribute to the amazing work USA does.
Q: Is there anything else members should know about you?
A: Just that I am very excited to be joining the USA team and if anyone ever needs anything, feel free to reach out anytime.
